I was really chuffed yesterday.
I jumped on the static bike and started pedalling as you do. Now, the triathlon is a 10k cycle followed by a 5k run, so I have been cycling the 10k to get used to the distance. When I first started had minimal resistance on the bike and it took about 25 - 30 minutes. That was at about 80 rpm.
Yesterday, I got halfway through the time that I cycle for and realised that I was barely raising a sweat or having to breathe heavily. I was ten minutes into my ride and on 5.3km. That made me feel awesome. What was even better was that the resistance level is now on 10. I finished my 10k in 20minutes and 14 seconds (I must have slowed down a bit) but felt so good that I just "rode" for another 5 minutes.
After that it was over to the treadmill. The dreaded treadmill. I hate running. With a passion. But focussing on my why...
I ran, albeit at a fairly slow pace (10 minute mile) for 20 minutes without slowing once. In fact about halfway through I again noticed that it was not affecting me as much as when I started. I was more bored than worn out!
My heart rate was also not as high. on the machine it gives me a reading and says what my target rate should be. At my age I should be upto 162 bpm. Well, after my cycling and then 20 mins on the treadmill I was only just above that at 175.
Not bad considering it was that high when I started walking a month or so ago.
I think my diet and supplementation has alot to do with it. For those following what I am doing, I am eating about 2000 cal per day and having approx 110 grams of protein within that.
I am also using the Melaleuca isotonic drink, Sustain, which I notice is helping my performance immensly.
My swimming is a little slower. I need to do 14 lengths of the pool in front crawl. I can do it breast stroke, but I only managed 3 of crawl. Still, I know that I will improve!
If you would like to know more about my diet, my supplementation or exercise programme feel free to email me and I can tell you more. If you are just starting out, or thinking about it, again let me know. I would love to support you.
Either way please keep thinking about me, at 6am every day, and please consider generously supporting Coeliac UK and all the work that they are doing.

Supplements
I thought it might be useful to outline the supplements that I am using to prepare for the triathlon. As I started this, I was extremely unfit and very over weight. So much so, that when I took a book out of the library to look at measuring my baseline fitness assessment, I couldn't do the exercise that they recommended becuase I was too unfit!
So, if like me, you are thinking about doing something, can I please recommend that you speak to somebody in the know about diet and supplementation, as this has really helped me.
The range of products that I am using is produced by a company called Melaleuca. If you would like more information, please feel free to ask me.
Before my exercise I am using what is called an Access Bar. These bars are used by Tammy Van Wisse, who is the World Record holder for swimming across the Channel, the Hudson River, and various other amazing feats that leave me wondering WHY?!
To rehydrate, I use the Lemon Sustain Drink. This has been clinically proven to be better than Powerade and many of the drinks like that, as it replenishes the four major electrolytes that the body depletes when working out.
Finally, for my day to day supplementation, I am using the Daily for Life for Men.
I guess when I first started this I was a little bit "suck it and see" however the more I am doing, the more I am enjoying this whole process. Bearing in mind I have really only just begun, I am quite excited!
The promise that was made to me when I looked at these products was "if you don't feel any benefit after 90 days you can return the empty bottles for a full refund". Their money is safe!
All I would say to you is that if you are looking to try some supplementation, these products are worth trying, with a full 90 day money back guarantee. Leave a comment for me with your contact details if you would like to find out how you can purchase them.
Sorry if that sounds like a sales pitch - I don't mean to be mercenary however this triathlon I think will cost me in the region of £700 and if, whilst helping other people improve their health, I can recoup some of that expense, I certainly shall!

Slim, Gym & Grim - week 1
Well, where to start?
I thought that I had better be responsible so I went to the Dr to check that there is no reason why I cannot undertake my Triathlon. She said that I am healthy and physically quite able to start. So away I went to the Gym.
At long last and for the first time in my life I have qualified for a Gold Card! This is not as exciting as it first seems however, as it is a Gold Card for the local Health Centre. I have to say, they have got it well sorted. Bromley My Time is a charitible organisation who have taken over the leasure function of Bromley Council.
If you are nearby they are worth looking into, or see if there is anything similar in your town.
What I found very helpful was my induction to the gym. As a newbie (all my fitness past is over 15 years ago) I was a little bit hesitant going into a gym where everyone seems to know what they are doing, and all look ripped. Well more ripped than me, but I have to be honest and say as my 16 and a bit stone waddled in, I was made to feel welcome, given an introduction to every piece of equipment and given a realistic plan to review at the end of the month.
I was told that to be ready for August was tough: but do-able if I take it seriously. Fair enough.
So feeling a little confident, I spoke to a friend about diet. Now in the past I have been involved with Herbalife and so thought that I would use their products again however my friend Grace introduced me to an online store called Melaleuca.
From now on I am going to split this blog up. To find out what supplements I am taking, to see my food diary and to see daily/weekly exercise targets please click on the "Labels" link at the side of the blog.
For my general feelings overview etc read the "general" posts.
What I would like for this blog is for Coeliacs to be able to get more help, understanding and recipe and lifestyle ideas. I also want them to see that someone cares!
I am on a really balanced diet now, to help me not only lose the excess weight but to help me build up muscles strength and endurance.
I am impressed. The products are amazing, not just for my diet/nutrition but for throughout the whole house. If I sound a bit zealous it's because I am. Have a look! You will see what I mean. Mail me and I can send you a link.

When your "why" is big enough
Eek!
I am doing the London Triathlon, and I don't know how this has happened. One minute, I'm a 16 1/2 stone couch potato, very good at watching sport, even better at discussing sport, but never actually DOING it.
Now, I face 15 1/2 km of sheer hell. Why? Let me tell you a story.
This is why I am doing it. Last year my father in law, Bill, got ill. It didn't seem too serious to start with. Tummy pains, feeling sick and always tired/achey/ no umph.
The doctors said one thing, then another. Then, yet another.
The long and short of it was he was diagnosed with late onset Coeliacs Disease. Sadly it was picked up too late. He got worse. It lead inevitably and commonly to T-cell Lymphoma and sadly, after a short period we lost him.
Could this have been avoided? I don't know. Could it have been spotted earlier? Yes.
That is why I am doing it. My brother in law was tested, as was all the family, and yes! He has Coeliacs disease. It makes sense now - but we didn't know.
There are some 500,000 people who have it and don't yet know it.(research estimate)
Every day Coeliac Uk handle in the region of 80 calls from people trying to get help. They campaign to educate GPs, and they are lobbying to see changes in the way our hospitals cater for in patients. (We had to take Bill's food in to him as the hospital could not cater for him).
That is why I am doing it!
What will you do? I am trying to raise £15,700. That is £1000 per km. It isn't really very much is it. Just 1000 people donating £15.70. The cost of 3 packets of cigarettes. The cost of 7 Starbuck coffees. The cost of a round on Friday night. The cost of a Crispy Duck. Not much huh?
If I do what I can - that is to compete: will you do what you can - that is to donate?
I hope you will and thank you in advance!!!
The rest of this blog is to act as a diary of my trials and tribulations. The diet program, the fitness program. The lot. Please comment. Please support me. Please donate.
Thank you for reading and I hope to see you the other side of the finishing tape.
